IPL 2022: Mumbai Indians' Jasprit Bumrah wins Player of the Match despite team’s loss against Kolkata

Jasprit Bumrah gave out one of the best performances for Mumbai Indians in Monday’s match in the 2022 Indian Premier League T20 cricket tournament against the Kolkata Knight Riders. The bowler had successfully taken out an incredible five wickets in 4 overs in the first innings. He was named Player of the Match despite Mumbai losing the match.

“When you contribute with wickets it’s always a good feeling, but the very important thing is to make the team win. We got into a good position but midway through the innings the pressure creeped on and we lost the game,” Bumrah said post-match.

“But it is the way it is. It’s a good day. I got wickets and we were able to execute whatever we wanted to. I don’t look at numbers or goals. My main aim is to follow the process and have a good mindset.”

KKR lost nine batsmen by the end of their innings and five of them were caused by Bumrah. Bumrah first took Andre Russell’s wicket at 14.2 overs stopping him at 9 runs off 5 balls. He then dismissed Nitish Rana immediately after at 14.5 overs as the ball was caught by Ishan Kishan.

The 28-year-old bowler took out the third wicket from Sheldon Jackson at 17.1 overs then Pat Cummins at 17.3 overs. He also forced Sunil Narine to score a golden duck as he took him out immediately at 17.4 overs.

Even with Bumrah’s excellent performance, the Indians failed to bring home a win this time as well. Mumbai lost the second time against KKR this Monday this season. The team has been at the bottom of the scoreboard almost all season.

Match summary

The Indians played against the Knight Riders at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Monday, May 9, 2022. It was the 52nd match out of 74 in the IPL 2022 with Kolkata winning by 52 runs. Previous multiple-champion MI extended its chain of loss and this time to KKR.

The game started with Mumbai winning the toss and choosing to bowl in the first innings much like many previous teams in the season. The Knight Riders were then able to get 165 runs off a full 20 overs. They almost lost the chance to bowl to the last overs as they already lost 9 wickets by the end of the innings.

Top scorers for the team include Venkatesh Iyer with 43 runs off 24 balls and Nitish Rana with 43 runs off 26 balls.

The Indians came to bat in the second innings and must then chase KKR’s score. They failed to catch up with the score with only 113 runs off 17.3 balls. They left the field without batting the last 2.3 overs in the innings since they ran out of wickets.

Ishan Kishan leads the scoring for Mumbai as he scored 51 runs off 43 balls. The other top scorers did not make it past 15 runs.

Mumbai is currently in last place of 10 teams in the IPL which has been their position almost all 2022 season. They have shared the 10th position with also the multi-champion Chennai Super Kings who is now ranked 9th. MI has lost nine out of eleven games so far. Their next games are against CSK, the Sunrisers Hyderabad, then the Delhi Capitals.

KKR shoot out in ranks and is now placed 7th by winning five out of twelve games they played. Their next game is against the Sunrisers this Saturday then the Lucknow Super Giants next Wednesday.
